Shreya Ghoshal, the super crooner and a beauty and our princess recently spoke to HT. Excerpts of the chat are below:
On Live shows Shreya says - In fact, throughout the first 10 days of the year, I was travelling for shows.
About holidaying - I haven’t done that in the last two or three years. Every time I make a plan, I fall ill. I think the idea is a bit jinxed. But this year, I want to take off on a longish vacation.
What are you most kicked about this year- Honestly, I haven’t stepped into a recording studio yet. Neither do I know which composers want to me to sing for them. Of course, I will be singing for the south movies and an Indra Kumar movie. Tere Naina, a duet by Shankar Mahadevan and me from Chandni Chowk to China, is already on air. But I don’t know if it has been retained in the movie.
Have your songs ever been excluded from an album - Several times.. when I was a newcomer. The song would often be scrapped because the brief given to the composer and the song requirement would change in the last minute. Thankfully, that hasn’t happened in the last two or three years.
The Chandni Chowk.. song hasn’t been promoted.. don’t you get upset when such things happen? - If the song is really pleasing, then I do feel disappointed.. though it’s a temporary emotion. I don’t know what’s happening on the Chandni Chowk.. song promos because I haven’t been in town..Poochhe jo koi from Yahaan wasn’t promoted though it’s one of my best songs. The film wasn’t a commercial one.. so the promotions may have been low key. Ek pal from Ankahee is another favourite which people hardly know about. Thankfully, there are some dedicated listeners. I often read their blogs for feedback.
Why did you accept 10-line version of the title track in Rab ne Bana di Jodi - See, Aditya Chopra and Salim Suleiman requested me to sing it for their movie. I couldn’t say no. I knew it would be short. Adi wanted the song to be a full-length one but Salim Suleiman didn’t.. they felt it would sound repetitive on the album. The song has registered in everyone’s mind.
On being a regular with AR Rahman albums - I must thank him for giving me so many opportunities. There’s a variety in the songs he offers me. When I flew to Chennai for the recording of Ghajini, I thought he would offer me something really mushy but he gave me Lattu, the itemish funky song. I sang the romantic duet Kaise mujhe tum but Lattu was the highlight for me.
About her private solo album - I will start working on it towards the end of the year. I can’t work on it right now because there are some legal and contractual issues.
On being celebrity judge - Please, it’s very embarrassing to judge people who are senior to you. Most contestants on these shows are either a year or two younger or older than me. I need to become more mature as a singer. I’m too young to judge I guess. Chhote Ustaad was with children. I love kids. I accepted because kids are not fussy.
