"So, Shreya you have done it again by winning the IIFA Award. Congrats to you!"
What a success story it’s been this year for the diva. We just hope she carries on like this without loosing her focus.
Shreya won the Filmfare, Zee Cine, Apsara, Star Screen, National Award, GPBA (German Public Bollywood Award) and now the IIFA Award but do you think the media gave her back what she deserves. Was she covered and pampered by our media; especially the print media for her feats like they do to Bollywood actors. No! I think the media really plays to the gallery when it comes to choosing issues or choosing covers or center folds for their publications.
Inconsequential actors get media glare even if they have a bad stomach or get front-page coverage for silly reasons like getting a tattoo done or maybe for not getting proper sleep at night! But the singers; well the story ends just when its starts. It’s a fact that playback singers form the backbone of many a robust chart-spinning number as much as music form the heart and soul of many a blockbuster movie. While the music directors do get some degree of hype and hoopla, our singers are, by and large, still ignored. The focus of the arc lights always evades them whether it’s an award ceremony, a music release or a jubilee celebration! The most ridiculous happens when you hardly notice a singer being invited even to a formal music release of a movie in which he or she sang!! You usually find the lead pair doing the honors’ and hogging the limelight while the singers are either not invited to the do or relegated to one corner of the stage. Now, that I feel is quite sad. I remember Jatin (of Jatin Lalit fame) saying once on TV that "music directors create songs while the singer puts the soul in them". Coming from a music director, these lines means a lot.
Here I would especially like to put forth the case of our youth icon, Shreya Ghoshal. Shreya had recently won her 2nd National Award and in fact while these awards were being announced she was also collecting her best singer award at the 54th South Filmfare Awards!! So two major awards within a space of a few days! Interestingly, Mr. Bachchan also won a National Award and as expected the entire national media bandobast went gaga over the achievement of this 60+ superstar while they almost forgot the grand accomplishment of the young achiever. Two major awards in a space of a couple of days were not enough I guess!! Even now, after the IIFA awards, the newspapers are abuzz as to how Kareena fought with Saif, and how sexily the Bollywood actors dressed and how they romped their way to the venue of the awards. But in the melee they almost forgot those two individuals who actually put their souls to bring life to many a blockbuster movie or a music album. I'm referring to Shreya & Shaan. Aren’t they stars? Aren’t they talented? Aren’t they as much a part of Bollywood success or failure as say a top actor? Don’t their shows sell like hot cakes? Then why such a bias against our singers.
Actors are no doubt very popular but so are now our singers too. One click on Google Search for Shreya Ghoshal yields 2, 60,000 results while Orkut has more than 1000 results for Shreya Ghoshal!! The music reality show Chote Ustaad actually got TRPs primarily because of the presence of Shreya!!! These examples speak enough of their 'pulling power'.
I think the media has to give all the lovely people behind the microphones what they deserve. Infact its time the media covers singers - the divas, as extensively as the actors. Why not have interviews, photo galleries, photo sessions and scoops on them too!
Why cant a Shreya Ghoshal, who has 5 best singer awards in row be on the cover of a glossy? Media guys need to give Shreya her due..now!!!!!
